I graduated from CCM in 1965 and taught for one year in Cincinnati. In 1966, I married a former Woodwardite, Karl Kumpf. I taught two more years in New Jersey while Karl was in seminary.
We moved back to Ohio, and I taught private piano lessons for six years until I finally became a mother!
I retired from elementary music in 1997. In 1998, I began teaching one day a week at Head Start, and I'm still doing that and having a ball!
In 2005, I finally answered a twenty-year call from God, and launched a food recovery program coupled with community gardening. Harvest of Hope (HOH) receives donated food- which has reached it's sell-by date but is still good to eat- and takes the food to area agencies and pantries.
Since 2006, HOH has recovered over 175,000 pounds of food which has helped to meet the increasing numbers of families who are needing to rely on pantries and soup kitchens. Our refrigerated truck is on the road 3-4 times a week.
Our community garden program will add the eighth garden site in the county this season. HOH provides gardening classes, plots, seeds, plants, and tools for those unable to afford gardening. In 2009, we had a total of 77 gardeners in two communities. We anticipate an increase of around 100 gardeners for the 2010 season. The garden program collaborates with the OSU Extension Office, Marietta College, and several local school districts.
All of this work is accomplished by over 100 volunteers, who gave over 2,600 hours in 2009. I can truly say that working with so many committed volunteers is the most rewarding thing I have ever done.
